Hearing Tests

Hearing tests are designed to measure your sound reception and processing capabilities. If a hearing loss is detected, it is also intended to determine the nature of hearing loss you experience and the extent to which you experience it.

Here’s what to expect at one of our hearing tests:

Consultation

You will answer some questions about your medical history. This helps us figure out if there is an underlying medical reason for your hearing loss.

Ear Examination

With an otoscope, we will examine your eyes, a device that helps us to look at your ear canal and eardrum to determinate whether there are blockages or anything unusual.

Tests

Pure-tone audiometry: A bank of sounds at different pitches and volumes are played into your headphones and you are required to raise your hand once you hear them.
Speech recognition: This tests your ability to understand speech without having visual cues such as lip movements or facial expressions.
Tympanometry: It helps to determine whether there is fluid in the middle ear that should not be there.

Review of Audiogram

The results will be recorded on an audiogram following these tests, which is a mapping of your hearing skills. We will explain your results on the basis of the findings and the next course of action.

Veterans Services

Are you a veteran concerned about your hearing? You're not alone. Approximately one million veterans receive hearing loss disability compensation annually. You must first apply for VA Health Benefits to receive hearing aids and services free of charge or at low cost. Veterans can receive hearing tests, exams, and hearing aids from a VA medical center once registered.
